2004 Wynns Riesling, Australia $15

Looking for a fun and versatile wine for the holiday, than this is a sure winner. Australian Rieslings tend to be drier than the German and United State versions and this one delivers great fruit without the cling sweetness you find in other wines. The nose has layers of orange blossom and creamy citrus notes. This leads into a great balanced with acidity and fruit framed perfectly. Toasted honey, white apricots and pear flavors flowed over the tongue making for a great tasting experience. The finish allows the fruit to resurface and imparts a creamy vanilla mouth feel. A great example of what they can produce down under.

Almost anything spicy will do well with this wine. The idea is on of contrast the spicier the food the sweeter the wine. It balances out the dynamics and shows different layers in the wine. Another great menu choice would be Creole cooking, again for the spice. If you are not into the hot and wild food, than a citrus grilled fish might be right up your alley. I am a true believer in bold foods with this style of Riesling.

This winery has been making Rieslings since 1962, and is consistently a great value. This winery was revived in 1951 by the Wynn brothers purchased the vineyards originally planted in 1891 by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch. Today this winery is the largest in the Coonawarra region, producing great values each vintage.
