2002 Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, California, $26
What a big massive Cabernet for such a great price, we blind
tasted this wine and I was sure it was a fifty dollar bottle. Layers of thick
blackberry and cocoa flavors fill the nose on the first sniff, letting you know
this wine is going to give you lots in the mouth. Black cherry, cassis and
smoky tobacco fill the mouth and lead into layers of berries and toasted oak,
all of which flow together like velvet. What a treat to be able to have all
these wonderful flavors in one bottle.
This wine beckons for red meat. We enjoyed it with pan seared filet mignon topped with a green peppercorn, red wine sauce. The peppercorns matched well with the tobacco and spice in the wine and the fruit flavors allowed the filet to shine. Another great meal idea would be salt and pepper grilled New York strips right off the grill. As you can see meat is the winner with this wine.
Kendall-Jackson was started by Jess Jackson, a lawyer with a passion for great wine at affordable prices. It is one of the largest wineries in California and always makes a great bottle of wine from vintage to vintage. He grapes used for this wine were hand selected to get the most flavor from each berry. This wine is 100% Cabernet, primarily from Sonoma.
