2001 Penfold’s Bin 389 Cabernet and Shiraz, Australia $26

This wine has a deep dark color that lets you know it is going to be full bodied and bold. The aromas are out of this world, vanilla, dried blueberries and rich jammy berry jump right into your face and grab your attention. The aroma was just a teaser of the flavors to follow; oak, rich dark fruit and an olive spiciness grab each taste bud and than a rush of dark soft fruit fills the mouth. The finish lingers and keeps you hoping there is another bottle in the rack. This is a blend of Cabernet for structure and dark fruit and Shiraz for spice and fresher flavors

This wine was a perfect match for my duck dinner. We use boneless breat of duck with a red wine, dried cranberry sauce. The tartness of the berries and ricness of the wine pair perfectly with the flavors of the duck. It was a true winner. Another great menu idea would be any cut of great streaks with or without a sauce.

In Australia the number one wine that always commands the highest price and is most sought after is Penfold’s Grange, this wine is sometimes called the baby Grange or Poor Mans Grange, because the barrels used to make it are the barrels used in the previous vintage for Grange. This wine will drink nicely now or will last up to fifteen years or more.
