2006 Bonterra Vineyards, Mendocino County, 100% Organically Grown Grapes Chardonnay, California $15
This wine starts with great aromas of butterscotch and yellow apples. The flavors of baked apples, layers of creamy caramel all balanced nicely with a tropical fruit finish. All of these flavors stayed fresh on the palette and dissipated slowly holding for the next sip. The structure of the apple fruit and oak were complimented in each sip with the warmer tropical fruit notes. A great mouth feel and perfectly balanced, made with all organically grown fruit.
This wine has allot of flavors and will work well with a verity of menu ideas. We had our parents over and grilled out Greek chicken topped with with fresh herbs and lemons accompanied by fresh asparagus. The tanginess of the lemons and fresh herb flavors allowed the apple and tropical fruit to notes to shine, while the oak and butter notes paired perfectly with the crisp chicken skin and meat. We also had crab stuffed Portobello mushrooms as an appetizer, and this wine did perfectly here also, the garlic and butter and fresh flavors of the crab along with the meaty flavors of the mushroom were a winner with the wine also.
Bonterra's commitment to organic vineyard management is based on farming fundamentals: building organic matter in the soil with cover crops, welcoming the natural predators of vineyard pests, controlling weeds by physical means, and encouraging natural air flow around the fruit. They are able to do this without the cost of the wine going out of control, it is a commitment to putting back into the earth what we take that makes this wine and winery a true winner.
