2006 Pannotia Torrontes, Argentina $14
This wine has a great nose of floral and honeysuckle aromas that might lead to think that it is sweet, but don't let this nose fool you this is a racy, clean and crisp wine from start to finish. The flavors were great lemon zest, and white peaches were balanced perfectly with a apple and citrus finish. Refreshing to the last sip, it keep all the flavors in balance with just the right amount of acidity. Excellent bottle of wine for the price.
We enjoyed our bottle with steamed oysters and shrimp. The minerality of the oysters allowed the citrus notes to shine in each sip. The shrimp was a perfect match with the apple and lemon zest flavors allowing each sip to create a new tasting experience. This wine will also go great with fish or even chicken. It is like a a sweet tea, it will work well with almost any meal.
The Torrontes grape has mysterious origins; it seems to have arisen on the plains of Argentina, an accidental crossing between Criolla Chica and the wildly floral and aromatic Muscat of Alexandria. Argentina is the world's fifth largest producer of wine. According to Mark Preskenis, "Traditionally, most of it is intended to be the cheapest of wines; only a handful is intended for excellence. That's changing as more wines are improving. As a greater percentage of wines are intended for the world market, there are increasing numbers of wines that can stand alongside the world's best." This wine has achieved that goal.
